Expert Rigging Services

For a sailing vessel to travel around the world, safe expert rigging solutions require a technician with extensive hands-on experience, specialized knowledge of offshore conditions, and meticulous attention to detail. This is not a job for a novice; marine rigging demands a proven track record, as a failure at sea can be catastrophic.

Technical and practical skills

A rigger must possess a sophisticated set of technical skills to ensure the safety and longevity of the vessel's rig. These include:

Precision measuring and assembly: The rigger must be an expert in measuring, swaging, and splicing all types of ropes and cables, from standard wire to high-tech Dyneema.

Mast and component inspection: Our process involves a complete mast teardown and inspection. We use techniques to inspect critical components and ensure they are free from hairline cracks or stress fractures.

Problem-solving in difficult environments: The ability to work safely and effectively at great heights and in adverse weather is a core skill. The offshore rigger anticipates potential issues and designs the rig to prevent failures from chafing, corrosion, and extreme weather.

Advanced troubleshooting: An experienced rigger has learned from past mistakes—both their own and others'. This allows them to foresee and address complex problems that a novice might miss, like diagnosing why a system is failing hundreds of miles from shore.

A meticulous process

For an offshore voyage, the rigger’s process is a checklist of critical steps designed for redundancy and resilience:

Full mast and boom inspection: We completely dismantle the mast and boom to inspect every part for signs of wear and tear.

Reinforcement against chafe: We install anti-chafe solutions on any areas where ropes or lines could rub against surfaces, a leading cause of rig failure on long passages.

Renewal and upgrades: We will consider renewing all mast wiring and can upgrade to modern equipment like captive ball car systems for easier sail handling.

System integration: We'll ensure proper wiring conduit is in place and inspect all mast track fixings for signs of vibration.

Expert tuning: Finally, we will correctly adjust and tune the entire rig. Insufficient shroud tension, for instance, can drastically reduce the life expectancy of the rigging and is a common point of failure for less experienced riggers.
